6th Grade Science - Classwork Resources
Fossil Fuels Jigsaw (06/04/2014)
You will be jigsaw reading about fossil fuels and their roles in our every day life. Jigsaw reading is when we divide a reading into different parts within a group and each member within the group is responsible becomes an expert for the day on the content or ideas of their section. Each member will then have a chance to share out and teach the rest of their group what they've learned in their section so that everyone has a complete picture and everyone is well informed.
You will be jigsaw'ing Chapter 5, Section 3 of your textbook on Fossil Fuels. The division will occur as follows:
REMEMBER you are SUMMARIZING the information you are responsible for. You are to take notes on your section. But only include the IMPORTANT information! Answering the following questions can help you summarize your information better and more clearly:
You will be jigsaw'ing Chapter 5, Section 3 of your textbook on Fossil Fuels. The division will occur as follows:
- Person 1: What are fossil fuels and types of fossil fuels (pgs. 111-112)
- Person 2: How and where fossil fuels form; and how humans extract them (pgs. 113-115)
- Person 3: Problems with fossil fuels and dealing with fossil fuels (pgs. 116-117)
- Person 4: Oil Rush! (The importance and demand for oil) (pg. 131)
REMEMBER you are SUMMARIZING the information you are responsible for. You are to take notes on your section. But only include the IMPORTANT information! Answering the following questions can help you summarize your information better and more clearly:
- Who?
- What?
- Where?

Underground Water Filtration Proposal
Read pgs. 263-265 in your textbook
With your table groups, you will be responsible for designing a water filtration system for underground water. Your water filtration system must have AT LEAST 3 FILTRATION/PURIFICATION STAGES/METHODS.
As individuals, each person is responsible for submitting the following:
1) ONE paragraph explaining what pollutes underground water or sources of pollution in underground water (you must cite sources)
2)Describe each stage of filtration, what happens in each one. Draw a detailed and LABELLED picture of the entire filtration system.
3) Explain in about 3-5 sentences the rationale for EACH stage of filtration in your filtration system (i.e. what is the reasoning for each stage of filtration and how does it eliminate the pollution in the water)

The Beginner's Guide to Weathering and Erosion (assigned 04/01/2014)
1) You will be creating a “The Beginner’s Guide to Weathering and Erosion for Rivers.” The front cover should be well-decorated and have a related image. Your guide SHOULD be written for an early river system, and must explain how a river can increase its rates of weathering and erosion. The following information/pages must be included WITH PICTURES/IMAGES/GRAPHICS/DIAGRAMS:
a. Definition of weathering and erosion. How are they different? Explain the importance of the role water plays in these processes.
b. How running water (like in a river) causes weathering and erosion
c. Run-off progress (rills --> rivers)
d. Define the following and explain the relationship of each of these factors to erosion rates:
*All this information can be found on pg. 248-254 of their textbook*
Remember, you are writing to a water droplet, as if it were a person trying to get better at something (i.e. trying to become a river):
utmost importance because you play a vital role in the process of weathering and erosion. As you flip through these pages, your will discover more about

River Systems and Civilizations (assigned 03/24/2014)
Write 2-3 paragraphs explaining the importance of rivers to the development of society (you SHOULD research this question AND CITE YOUR SOURCES). You will:
1.Pick a specific river or river system and describe the impact the river had on the civilization (ex: the Nile river for Ancient Egyptians; the Amazon River for Brazilians; The Indus River or the Ganges on the Ancient Indians; The Mississippi River on the early Americans). Some questions to consider:
2. Based on what you learned about the impact of the river system on your selected region, explain why might people or civilizations tend to settle near river systems?
3. Find a picture of a map with their selected region’s river system and trace the outline of the drainage basin in their region.
*You may submit online in the assignment submission box below*

- How did the river affect their agricultural practices (food and relationship with animals)?

River in a Jar Lab (assigned 03/18/2014)
Include the following:
Analysis Questions:
Day 1:
1) What happened and why? Why did the particles layer up the way they did?
2) What happened to the salt?
3) How does this represent a real river?
Day 2:
Sketch what you observe now.
1) What do you notice after one day of letting the jar sit? How did the "river" in the jar change between yesterday and today?
2) Why do you think these changes occurred? Explain what happened.
3) What would yesterday's jar represent in terms of activity and what would today's jar represent?
4)If you were to separate the components of the river in the jar, how would you do it?
DUE WEDNESDAY MARCH 19th, 2014

Volcanoes on Other Planets
We have learned about volcanoes on Earth, but are there volcanoes elsewhere in the universe?
Today you are going to explore the volcanoes of the universe. You will need to answer the following questions and do the following:
1) Are there volcanoes on other planets or celestial bodies? If so, which planets or celestial bodies?
2) Pick a planet or other celestial body where volcanoes might be found. CREATE A VENN DIAGRAM or a compare/contrast chart of some kind (see below for examples). In your comparison or contrast chart, you will need to conduct some RESEARCH to explore as much of the following information as you can:

- How do volcanoes form on that other planet? How do they form on earth?
- How big or how small are the volcanoes or on that other planet? How big are they on Earth?
- How many volcanoes are on the other planet? About how many are on Earth?
- How do we study volcanoes on the other planet? How do we study them on Earth?
- What are the eruptions of volcanoes like on the other planet? What are they like on Earth?
- Describe what the plate tectonics are like on the other planet, if any? What is it like on Earth?
- Anything else to compare?
|
3) Picture analysis:
- Find at least ONE satellite image of a volcano on Earth and at least ONE satellite image of a volcano on your selected planet.
- Copy the images AND CITE THE SOURCE.
- Now you will "read" the pictures. Look at both pictures closely. Make observations about each picture and fill out a similar table to the one in the image below (you will have to make your own table on your device or a piece of paper)
4) What questions do you have about the volcanoes on your chosen planet? I.e. If you were an astronomer/astrogeologist or space scientist what questions would you want to explore further or study further about volcanoes on your chosen planet? (You should have at least FIVE questions)

4) First, take a look through all of the pages of the newspaper. What sort of features/articles do you see as it relates to the Earthquake?
- Make a list of all the different features/articles you see as it relates to the Northridge Earthquake
- (3-4 sentences each): Pick ONE of those features and explain why you think that feature would be an important for a reader of that time. Use evidence to support your claims (it can be from the article, the newspaper or form an outside source). How ever, with whatever evidence you pick you basically want to demonstrate why that feature would be important to read or look at (for example, if there are ads on buying earthquake supplies, why would it be important to put it in the newspaper?).
5) Pick one of the full articles in the newspaper and write 7 sentence summary on what that article was about. Include the following information in our summary:
