Finish the in-class activity in which you must:
1) look at FIVE (5) samples of letters from either the "letters to the next president" archive (LINK IS ON THE CLASSWORK RESOURCES PAGE) or from the historical letters provided in class.
2) copy the first couple of sentences from the introductions from each letter

So for example, if I am looking at JFK's letter to Nikita Kruschev from 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, one of my five examples would would look something like this:
"Dear Mr. Chairman, I have read your letter of October 26th with great care and welcomed the statement of your desire to seek a prompt solution to the problem." (John F. Kennedy, Telegram to Nikita Kruschev, 1962). [ Summary of strategy used here: The author, JFK, begins his letter by acknowledging his past correspondence/experience/relationship with his audience and tries to start on a positive note by trying to show that they are in agreement with each other]
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

- Address your audience. Who is it? Don't just write "Hasbro". Who specifically should we be writing to (use the research you did on Hasbro to help you figure this out).
- Start by acknowledging something about Hasbro, specifically the Game of life. Perhaps start with something positive
- Introduce yourself, not by saying "My name is" (in fact, DON'T SAY THAT!) but explain to Hasbro in a few short sentences who you are and why you're writing this letter (do NOT write, "I'm writing this because my teacher made me" while that may be true, remember you want to appeal to the audience so make it convincing)
- Give some background/context about what the problem is here
- Include your thesis statement
Take a look at the various resources and examples of letters posted on my classwork resources page for 7th grade English to help you get started!

Brainstorming and notes for Business Plan Customer Profiles (assigned 02/05/2014)
Formulate at least 3 strong, research questions about all your potential customer markets (ex: upper middle class teens, writers, athletes, etc) FOR ONE BUSINESS IDEA (the one you will be focusing on). FIND at least THREE resources FOR EACH QUESTION so that it helps you develop a clearer picture of who your potential customers are.
If you are feeling ambitious, you can begin to take notes using your resources.
Tips to consider when figuring out who your potential customers are and trying to formulate your questions:
those type of products most, what are their sales numbers like, where are they being purchased most, what features are being used most ).
products.
- Location of potential customers
DUE TUESDAY FEBRUARY 11th, 2014
If you are feeling ambitious, you can begin to take notes using your resources.
Tips to consider when figuring out who your potential customers are and trying to formulate your questions:
- Try to identify specific groups of people who you can envision using your product/service/technology. Be specific (ex: American teens between 13-18; Upper middle class adults). The more specific you are, the easier it will be for you to figure out research questions. You can then move to broader categories, if you find you are being too specific.
- If you can identify a specific group of people, first identify what product or service that is already in existence that might be similar to yours. Then formulate questions as to who, why, how often, where, what aspects use or are being used (of) the product/service/technology.
those type of products most, what are their sales numbers like, where are they being purchased most, what features are being used most ).
- Consider also what needs your target customers have and find research/evidence that show that this is IN FACT a need. (For example: for my passion app, I could find evidence that shows that over 50% of adults say they are not passionate about their jobs and are dissatisfied with their careers. This shows a need because I'm using evidence to point out that people need an app like mine since they are not leading careers of passion).
- Some general questions to consider:
products.
- Location of potential customers

Passion & Talent T-Shirt Design (Assigned on August 26th, 2013)
Introduction:
We have been discussing the concept of finding and cultivating our talents and passions in life in order to achieve success in our lives, not just in school. It is when we recognize and accept our talents and aren't afraid to pursue to our passions that we can move towards living a truly enriching life. In the RSA Short Animation below, Sir Ken Robinson discusses this notion and how the diversity of human talent and passion, if we all choose to truly embrace them, can truly lead to the creation of a truly sophisticated society. There's a lot of fancy language in there, but I really encourage you to watch this video several times to truly glean from it the profound message he conveys. http://www.thersa.org/events/rsashorts/rsa-shorts-how-to-find-your-element
Assignment Part 1:
You are to design a T-Shirt which can be submitted to the Imaginary Foundation. The design of your shirt should represent any of the ideas presented in Sir Ken Robinson's video on "Finding Your Element" or something that represents finding/cultivating your talent, passion, creativity, open-mindedness, imagination, etc. Your design can be done manually on paper or digitally using an ipad/tablet app, but it MUST BE YOUR OWN! It should fill a whole page (8.5 X 11) and it should be colorful. It should also reflect a mindful effort (no stick figures or scribbles!). And this goes without saying, but make sure it is Catholic school appropriate :).

Assignment Part 2:
You are to write minimum 1/2 page to 1 page explaining/describing:
1) What your image is or what it represents
2) Why you chose to project/convey this image
3) What stylistic methods/strategies you chose to use (color, words, symbols, etc.)
4) What your process was like in coming up with your T-Shirt design (Did you have a hard time first trying to think of a design, or did you know what you wanted to do right away? Were you just scribbling/doodling around for a little while and then you suddenly had an epiphany on what to do? Did you know when to stop or felt like you could always keep improving/going? Did you like having so much freedom with the concept or were you wishing for more and very specific guidelines?) AND WHY?
