Piktochart Infographic (assigned 04/02/2014)
You are to research how air pollution affects the respiratory system and create an infographic (using www.piktochart.com) to help others understand this.
Things you should research:
Things you should research:
- Statistics about air pollution in Los Angeles
- Statistics about air pollution in California
- Statistics about air pollution in the United States
- Statistics about air pollution globally
- Statistics about the relationship of air pollution to respiratory diseases (is there a correlation of frequency of respiratory diseases in areas with higher air pollution)
Understanding Respiratory System Problems (assigned 04/01/2014)
- Download the file/chart below and complete it.
- You will need to conduct research (tell them at least 1-2 CREDIBLE sources for each health problem)
DUE BY THE END OF CLASS (unless otherwise stated)

Jump Rope for Heart Obstacle Course (assigned 03/17/2014)
You and your table group are to design an obstacle course for our Jump Rope for Heart day. Your obstacle course MUST represent and resemble THE PATHWAY OF BLOOD and THE PARTS OF THE HEART.
Requirements for your obstacle course:
INDIVIDUALLY, EACH PERSON IN YOUR GROUP WILL write an explanation as to how your group's obstacle course represents/illustrates the pathway of the blood.
DUE WEDNESDAY MARCH 19th, 2014
Requirements for your obstacle course:
- Should represent each stage of the pathway of blood we've discussed
- Should also represent the oxygenation of blood from the lungs in some way
- Have a poster that illustrates and GIVES SPECIFIC directions as to how to run your obstacle course (label equipment to be used, so the adults setting up for the obstacle will be able to set it up)
- HAVE A POSTER THAT DIAGRAMS THE PATHWAY OF BLOOD AND THE PARTS OF THE HEART
INDIVIDUALLY, EACH PERSON IN YOUR GROUP WILL write an explanation as to how your group's obstacle course represents/illustrates the pathway of the blood.

Body Systems Science and God Log Prompt-Romans 12: 3-8 (assigned 3/12/2014)
In Romans 12: 3-8, St. Paul writes, "...For as in one body we have many parts, and all the parts do not have the same function, so we though many are one body in Christ, and individually parts of one another..."
Here, St. Paul uses the body as an analogy to our community of faith.
DUE TUESDAY MARCH 18th, 2014
Here, St. Paul uses the body as an analogy to our community of faith.
- Explain St. Paul's analogy. What does he mean when he says "as one body we have many parts, and all parts do not have the same function?" Explain that part biologically
- How are we individual parts of the body? How can our roles as Christians be compared to the various roles of different body systems? Reference St. Paul's own examples in the passage (you will have to look the rest of the passage up).
DUE TUESDAY MARCH 18th, 2014
Body Systems Intro Activities (03/03/2014
1) Read pgs. 464-466
2) Create one of the following two types of concept maps to demonstrate your understanding from your reading (DUE AT THE END OF CLASS ON 03/03/2014):
3) Group poster/visual (no prezis or powerpoints) of assigned body system. Your visual must demonstrate:

2) Create one of the following two types of concept maps to demonstrate your understanding from your reading (DUE AT THE END OF CLASS ON 03/03/2014):
- KWL (What I KNOW, What I WANT to learn, What I've LEARNED)
- Russian Doll/Concentric Circle Map that shows represents all the major topics/units/concepts in science we've learned and how they are connected.
3) Group poster/visual (no prezis or powerpoints) of assigned body system. Your visual must demonstrate:
- Major organs and tissues in the body system
- Function/purpose
- Interesting/important facts
- Why this system is the most important system of the body. Convince us.
- YOU MUST CITE INFORMATION FROM AT LEAST FIVE OUTSIDE RESOURCES. Make sure you cite your sources!

Biotechnology and Bioethics
Science and God Log Prompt:
Your entry for this prompt must be thoughtful and reflective. That means, it must be backed up by evidence (from reliable sources) and thoroughly explained, and supported. Be sure to clearly state your positions on aspects that require you and give evidence-based reasoning to back up your opinions.
Answer the following questions:
1) What is biotechnology?
2) What is bioethics?
3) What moral and ethical responsibilities do scientists have?
4) As Catholics, what moral and ethical responsibilities do we have as citizens in championing or regulating scientific innovation, particularly as it relates to biotechnology?
As it pertains to genetic engineering:
5) What is genetic engineering and genetically modified organisms?
6) What are some ways/methods in which foods can be genetically modified?
7) What is the Catholic church's stance on genetic engineering and why? (you will need to look up some church documents regarding this)
Read this to get you started (Note: this article relates to GE in humans, not foods). Consider what the Church's fundamental of principle of respecting life means.
As you will learn in the video below, there is a big debate about the production of genetically modified food. As you watch the video, consider what are the advantages and dangers of genetic engineering as well as your Catholic perspective when formulating your opinions on this matter:

The Extraction:
Read the procedure here. Click on the hyperlinks there which explain why you go through each step. To do: 1) Write out your Materials list (BE SPECIFIC with amounts and measurements), and copy down the procedure as we do it in class! Remember it needs to be clear and precise so that someone could reproduce this activity. 2)) In your OWN words summarize in 1-2 sentences why we go through each step, and make a list of any questions you may have. Exploring DNA:
1) Read about how DNA is the instruction manual for all life 2) Answer the following questions:
DNA Extraction Virtual Lab:
Try this DNA Extraction Virtual Lab. Click on all the various icons, including the multimedia images to learn more about the structure and function of DNA. Also try out the virtual extraction. *Note: iPad users, you may need a flash/java player to operate this* |
