Catholic Social Teaching
You've just read an encyclical by St. Pope John Paul II wherein he explains the value and dignity of each human being. This is one among several similar encyclicals authored by St. Pope John Paul II and several popes before and after him, including our current pope, Pope Francis I. These teachings are in line and promote a critical aspect of applying our faith in our daily lives known as Catholic Social Teaching/Justice.
Catholic Social Teaching (<--click on the hyperlink) encompasses many different aspects from protecting human rights to caring for creation, and calls Catholics all over to commit their lives in service to one or more of these causes.
In its mission to protect the human dignity of every person, Catholic social teaching inherently aligns with global efforts to do the same, as is seen through the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which delineates the rights of all people as determined by the global coalition of several countries throughout the world. You can watch a video that explains as well as read more on the UN's Declaration of Human Rights here.
All these documents highlight for us the responsibilities we share in promoting the cause of human rights, which in itself encompasses several different dimensions that requires further exploration and research.

The "Letters to the Next President" was a nationwide school writing project that occurred during the time of the last presidential election. In this project, middle and high school students wrote persuasive letters to the presidential candidates to convince them about certain causes or their positions on specific issues such as education, environment, among many many other topics. Take a look at some of the examples there to see what might make a strong persuasive letter, and what might not.

You are going to read an excerpt of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous work, Sherlock Holmes. As you read through this chapter, try to map out Sherlock's (like we did for Descartes) his deductive reasoning and logic to solve his cases.

How To Find Your Element (Passion & Talent) (August 22nd-August 25th, 2013)
We have been discussing the concept of finding and cultivating our talents and passions in life in order to achieve success in our lives, not just in school. It is when we recognize and accept our talents and aren't afraid to pursue to our passions that we can move towards living a truly enriching life. In the RSA Short Animation below, Sir Ken Robinson discusses this notion and how the diversity of human talent and passion, if we all choose to truly embrace them, can truly lead to the creation of a truly sophisticated society. There's a lot of fancy language in there, but I really encourage you to watch this video several times to truly glean from it the profound message he conveys.
